Haitian artisans creating a better future
The Heart of Haiti
After working with women in Rwanda on a line of baskets, in 2004 Willa Shalit launched the line at Macy’s as a profit for partnership program. Completely different from a charity program, these women share the profits from items they work to make, making this a sustainable way for the women to improve their quality of life. They have already made 1.5 million dollars to date. While charitable donations can dry up at any time, a program like this puts these women in the driver’s seat with skills and a business model that supports them.
Shalit has joined with Macy’s again for her latest project, the Heart of Haiti, again showing up in a big way for a community in need – this time for the people of Haiti. She’s shown that if anyone can turn out a profit for a good cause she can! And now we can help too … by buying something beautiful!
To purchase products click here: Heart of Haiti Project. My favorite item is the Heart of Haiti Jewelry Hanger, Birds in a Breadfruit Tree for $35.00 but all of the items are beautiful, vibrant in color and hand-crafted. Most importantly, proceeds from the Heart of Haiti Project go to better nutrition, education and healthcare for the artisans.
